Changing my legs - and my mindset, is an interview that inspires the audience to feel like they can accomplish whatever they put their mind to. By telling her story, Aimee Mullins is able to connect to the audience in a way that most people can’t.
Aimee Mullins is a double amputee. She explains at the beginning of the talk that, “I was born without fibulas in both legs. I was amputated at age one, and I've been running like hell ever since, all over the place.” Aimee is an Olympic athlete that started out by winning a full academic scholarship that granted her a spot in Georgetown. When in Georgetown, she started training with a famous trainer and from there she worked her way up to the top. She tells that audience, “I ran my first race and I beat the national record-holder by three hundredths of a second, and became the new national record-holder on my first try out.” Many people were amazed including Aimee, when she accomplished this. Even though she had many accomplishments she also talked about some of the struggles she encountered along the way.
This talk was presented in the form of an interview. Because Aimee can’t stand for a long period of time she had to sit when giving the presentation. In my opinion I think Aimee could have gotten her point across better by just sitting up by herself and telling her story. The interview was not a very effective way of presenting her story. As a viewer it got boring to watch because of the length of the talk. Even though the content of the speech was interesting, the way it was presented was boring. At the end of the interview it just comes to a stop. There is no final message or no final comment left with the audience. The end of the presentation felt unfinished and confusing.
The content of this speech was pretty easy to understand. This video would be very inspirational for amputee children, it would be able to show them that if they work hard for what they want they can achieve it. Aimee does a good job of explaining some of the topics that may be confusing to some. For example she explains, “The Paralympics, just for a little bit of clarification, are the Olympics for people with physical disabilities -- amputees, persons with cerebral palsy, and wheelchair athletes -- as opposed to the Special Olympics, which deals with people with mental disabilities.” By explaining some of the difficult topics it makes it easier for younger children to understand. Instead of just telling the audience about her different prosthetics she brings her different legs with her so she can show the audience what she is describing. This was an effective way of helping the audience understand what she was talking about. Overall, the content of this interview was explained in a way that made it easier for a variety of ages to watch and understand.
Aimee Mullins is a very powerful, brave, incredible human being. Her story is inspirational and very motivating. I think this presentation would be very inspirational to any child amputee. She shows that you can do anything you put your mind to if you work hard enough for it. She wants kids to know that giving up isn’t an option and even though times can be tough you have to work through it and keep pursuing your dreams.
